Rigid Materials for Printed Signs

At The Big Picture, we use highly durable rigid materials to ensure a strong foundation for your signs, posters, banners, and other printed materials.
Our rigid materials reflect many levels of durability for your printing needs, and our helpful staff will be happy to help you decide with materials are the best choice for your printed signage needs.

Gator Board and Foam Board

Foam and Gator board is lightweight and rigid and has a foam center with paper backing on both sides. Foam and Gator board is available in 3/16″ and 1/2″ thicknesses, it can be custom cut to any size and printed on one or both sides.
Gator board and foam board are different in that foam board has a paper finish, while Gator board had a more durable wood-like finish. Gator board is more expensive than foam board, but is longer lasting and less vulnerable to bending, creasing or other damage.
Its weight and rigidity make it perfect for portable free-standing displays, such as trade shows, science fairs, and other events. Foam board and Gator board are ideal for:

  • Indoor posters or free-standing displays
  • Photo display
  • Art work

Corrugated Plastic

This material is most frequently used for yard signs and is a durable, low-cost option for printed signage. Corrugated plastic will resist outdoor elements, such as sunlight, wind, temperature extremes, and moisture for up to two years in most locations
Corrugated plastic signs are best for:

  • Yard signs
  • Indoor signs
  • Short-term outdoor signs

Lexan Polycarbonate

Lexan® Solar Grade Polycarbonate is the best plastic sign material for optimum weather resistance. This is the ideal rigid material for signs that will be exposed to prolonged harsh sunlight, as it provides better UV resistance than corrugated plastic. This means colors will stay bright and vibrant, whites will not turn yellow, and text will remain sharp and well-defined for a longer period of time than with other printed plastic materials.
For our customers who want an outdoor sign that will look great, even after months in the Texas summer sun, Lexan polycarbonate is the best option.

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)

Signs made of PVC are medium-weight and durable, and can be installed and transported easily. They are best for long-term indoor use (or short term outdoor use), as PVC will warp if left in the sunlight and may mildew if left in a moist environment. PVC is available in a variety of colors and can be customized and cut into many shapes or sizes.
PVC is an excellent choice for:

  • Indoor signs
  • Wall signs
  • Menu boards
  • Name plates
  • Directional signs
  • Tradeshow signs

Acrylic

Acrylic, or Plexiglas® signs are a beautiful choice for creating a sophisticated-looking translucent sign with a high-tech feel.
Acrylic signs are durable and long-lasting, but they must be handles with care, as they may become scratched, chip or shatter if mishandled. Acrylic signs should also be used indoors only, since they may warp or become discolored by exposure to direct sunlight or heat.
Acrylic signs are an excellent choice for:

  • 3-dimensional signs
  • Directional signs
  • Layered visual effects
  • Illuminated signs
  • Signs that need to make a visual impact

Medium-Density Overlaid Plywood (MDO)

Signs made from wood-based MDO are extremely durable and can withstand long-term use in harsh outdoor elements. This material is paintable, comes in many thicknesses, and can be cut with rounded or sharp corners. MDO signs can also be printed on both sides, with a matte or gloss laminate finish.
MDO is frequently used for:

  • A-frame or sandwich board signs
  • Signs bolted to posts or walls
  • Construction signs
  • Restaurant or business signs
  • Directional signs

Aluminum

Signs made from aluminum are excellent for outdoor usage, as they are incredibly durable and resist rusting in moist environments. Aluminum signs come in a variety of colors with a baked enamel finish.
Aluminum signs are commonly used for:

  • Traffic signs
  • Real estate signs
  • Pool and spa signs
  • Parking garages
  • Yard signs that can be used and re-used long term
